The Trail to Desegregation

The Trail to Desegregation In-Person

Speaker: Karen Ingram

Description:

On May 17, 2024, the nation celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the Supreme Court of the United States’ landmark decision to end segregation in public schools in the case of Brown v. Board of Education (May 17, 1954).

My project celebrated the decision on May 18.

The combined Delaware plaintiffs who were involved in the Brown case were Ethel Louise Belton, et al., and Shirley Barbara Bulah.  I designed a five-hour comprehensive history tour on a school bus to tell the stories of these plaintiffs, the lawyer who represented them, the Delaware judge who made the decision to integrate Delaware schools and to visit the four New Castle County historic sites that had a profound impact on his decision and the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.
